Rough seas in the Barcelona seaport Wednesday caused a massive passenger ferry to smash into a loading crane, creating a massive fire.
According to The Associated Press, the Italian company which owns the ferry, Grandi Navi Veloci, said strong winds and currents kept the ship from docking and eventually pushed the vessel into the port’s crane.
The 650-foot-long ferry was carrying passengers and vehicles at the time of the incident, but a Barcelona city spokeswoman said no injuries were reported. She also revealed a dozen firefighting vehicles and ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
Due to the containers knocked over by the crane containing hazardous chemicals, firefighters and emergency personnel used foam to put out portions of the fire, which they battled for hours before finally gaining control.
Barcelona’s civil protection department activated an alert for possible sea pollution.
