While a general rule for flight deals is to book sooner rather than later, the same is not true for hotel bookings.
That's according to online travel site Expedia.com, which released its timeline on the best times to book holiday travel this winter.
For Americans planning on traveling over US Thanksgiving, which this year falls on Nov. 22, the cheapest time to book flights is a month to three months in advance. That means starting your flight search now.
According to their stats, the optimum time to book and save is now through Oct. 22.
For Christmas travel this year, the optimum window is Oct. 26 through Dec. 4.
Those who booked during these windows in 2017 saved an average of 10 percent on holiday fares.
When it comes to hotel bookings, the opposite is true: Last-minute bookings can actually save travelers money.
According to Expedia, the best room rates can be found by booking a room zero to six days out, as some hoteliers will lower prices 20 to 30 percent to fill unsold rooms.
